Human Cannabinoids… GIMME

Did you know that the human body produces its own Cannabinoids? Well it does! Let’s look a little deeper and talk science. To explain, Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids derived from plants. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids produced naturally in the human body.  One example of an endocannabinoid is anandamide, or ‘the bliss molecule.’ This molecule activates the CB1 receptor.  Anandamide is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain that binds to the THC receptors. It’s been called the “bliss molecule,” named after ananda, the Sanskrit word for “joy, bliss, or happiness.”

Anandamide is part of your very own endocannabinoid system!  The endocannabinoid system (ECS) provides a wide array of functions to the human body, especially the brain.

Here are some of the daily functions ECS has a hand in:

  • Appetite, digestion, hunger
  • Sleep
  • Reproduction and fertility
  • Pleasure and reward
  • Pain
  • Memory
  • Motor control
  • Temperature regulation
  • Mood
  • Immune function

The endocannabinoid system is classed as a homeostatic regulator, meaning it is constantly working to bring about a state of balance to our bodies and minds. So to say this endocannaboid is important is an understatement! Now you might be wondering what this has to do with CBD.  CBD or Cannabiniols can actually enhance anandamide signaling.  Researchers have observed that administration of CBD leads to increased anandamide levels. They realized that CBD inhibits the FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase enzyme), which is responsible for breaking down anandamide in the body.  Basically CBD helps your body increase the amounts of its own bliss.  The more CBD and the entirety of the Cannabis species becomes more excepted the more studies we will be able to perform!  I’m sure we are just on the beginning trails of amazing holistic help with a very simple yet miraculous plant!
